Funeral services for Lynn Borgelt age 86 of Wisner, NE will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Zion-St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Wisner, NE with Pastor Robert Mayes officiating. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner and will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Lynn passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at the Colonial Haven Nursing Home in Beemer, NE.
Lynn Henry Fred Borgelt, son of Larry and Dorothy (Hoegemeyer) Borgelt, was born on June 11, 1940, at home on the family farm south of Beemer and was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Beemer. Lynn was a longtime member of Zion St John’s Lutheran Church where he was confirmed. Shortly after the birth of Lynn, they moved to Stanton County, and he attended District 57 School. At the age of 6 they moved back to Cuming County to the home farm place south of Wisner. He attended school at District 75 School and Zion St John’s Lutheran School. He later attended Wisner High School and graduated in 1957 at the age of 16. After high school, he attended college at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Agronomy and graduated in 1961. While attending college he met Betty “Marlene” Holcomb and they were married on December 23, 1962, at the First Baptist Church in Broken Bow, Nebraska. After they married, they lived on the family farm south of Wisner where they farmed, fed cattle and hogs, and raised their family. From their union they had four children, Kurt, Kevin, Kyle, and Kristina.
Lynn loved farming and having his children help alongside him. He farmed up to the mid-90’s when he decided to change career paths. He became a substitute mail carrier in the Hooper area and drove truck hauling cattle back to Cuming County. Once he was able to get a fulltime mail route, he left trucking and started carrying mail in the Wisner area.
Lynn was active in the Farm Bureau in his twenties and enjoyed the association. He also became a 4-H leader for the Bismark Livestock 4-H Club which he led with his good friend Keith Glaubius for over 25 years. Lynn also served on the Cuming County Fair Board for 23 years. He enjoyed the fair and working on different projects at the fairgrounds. Just to name a few: bringing in and setting up the windmill that sits at the main gate, moving St. Matthew’s church from south of Wisner to the west side of the fairgrounds and updating and installing the stain glass windows that came from another church. After he left the fair board, he became active with the Cuming County Historical Society, and you could find him during fair sitting in the historical tractor building visiting with other old-timers.
Lynn and Marlene enjoyed traveling. They had the privilege during retirement to travel to Germany, and they planned a 3-week trip to Alaska, which they drove all the way there and back. But the most memorable trips were with their children and grandchildren traveling to various place such as Disney World, Phoenix, San Antonio and most importantly Branson. Lynn enjoyed playing cards with his grandkids. He would always ask if it was his turn because everyone else was taking too long to play and then he would just play anyway. He enjoyed taking in shows in Branson and we can’t forget go-karting with him. He was notorious for sneaking away with 2 of his grandsons for ice cream, and they seemed to always find a toy store that sold tractors no matter if they were in Orlando or Phoenix. It was their little secret.
Lynn loved doing woodworking projects and it was a skill that he shared with his children and grandchildren. He loved making toy box dump trucks, doll cradles, doll highchairs, and a couple of shadow boxes for his grandchildren. He was known for making a variety of outdoor Christmas scenes and other projects.
Lynn is survived by his wife Marlene of 64 years. Sons Kurt Borgelt, Ashland, KS, Kevin (Tina) Borgelt, Beemer, NE, Kyle (Kim) Borgelt, Taylor, NE and daughter Kristi (Mike) Plagman, Cumberland, IA. Grandchildren: Alyssa (Broderick) Lierman, Beemer, NE; Garrett Borgelt, Wisner, NE; Austin (Gracie) Borgelt, Ashland, KS; Nichole (Kaler) Hazen, Minden, NE; Landon Borgelt, Ashland, KS; Eric (Emma) Plagman, Massena, IA; Emily Plagman, Ames, IA; Julianne Borgelt, Taylor, NE; Jasper Borgelt, Taylor, NE. Step-grandchildren: Shaila (Jacob) Vogel, Dodge, NE; Abby (Devin) Tilly, Vevay, IN; Rylie Hill, Burwell, NE; Olivia (Jamin) Dougherty, Burke, SD. Great-grandchildren: Kadence Rosendahl, Eason, Genevieve, Finley Lierman; Kellen Borgelt; Warren Borgelt; Keegan, Byron, Hallie Hazen; Ryder, Greyson Plagman. Baylen Schultz, Bria, Bennett Vogel; Oakleigh, Annabelle Tilley; Emerie Dougherty.
Lynn is preceded in death by his parents Larry and Dorothy Borgelt, parents-in-law Donald and Emily Holcomb and his step grandson Tyler Bennett.
