DOJ eyes Agri Stats settlement as meatpacking antitrust probe continues

The Justice Department says it expects to announce a settlement later this week in a price-fixing lawsuit involving a data company used in the meat industry, as federal officials also continue a broader antitrust investigation into major meatpackers, according to DTN.

The civil case targets Agri Stats, which the government alleges provided industry reports that meat companies used to coordinate pricing and manage supplies. Officials say the expected settlement would affect chicken, pork and turkey markets.

Separately, the administration says it is actively investigating potential antitrust violations involving four of the nation’s largest beef processors: JBS, Cargill, Tyson Foods and National Beef.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the companies’ combined control of roughly 85% of U.S. cattle processing has raised concerns about competition.

“These companies now have an unprecedented ability to wield market power and influence prices paid for cattle,” Rollins said.

Officials say the level of concentration has increased sharply over time, limiting options for cattle producers while amplifying the impact of supply disruptions.

The broader probe follows directives from Donald Trump to examine pricing and competition in the beef industry amid sustained consumer price pressure.

Rollins said the administration’s focus is on restoring competition in the sector.

“Food security is truly national security,” she said.
