Gary D Meyer, age 77, of Fremont, formerly of Hooper, passed away August 7, 2026 at Nye Legacy in Fremont.
Gary was born July 28, 1949 to Donald and Frances (Low) Meyer in Fremont. He grew up on the family farm north of Hooper, graduated from Scribner High School in 1967 and attended Wayne State College. In 1971 he accepted the Position of Assistant Manager with the Hooper Co-Op. He later became the Manager while continuing to farm the family ground. Gary’s knowledge and passion for the Ag world led him on his next journey as a Crop Insurance Adjuster for NAU. His job took him across the state helping all types of farmers and developing many lasting friendships. He retired in 2014.
Gary married Virginia Moseman on August 21, 1978. Together they built their home across from the family farm where they lived until moving to Fremont in 2018. Gary also had a love for the desert. After retiring, they fulfilled his dream of owning a home in Sun City West, AZ. They wintered down there for several years. They enjoyed golf, attending KC Royals Spring Training games, playing Mahjong and being in the company of both old and new friends.
Gary was a sports enthusiast. He excelled at Football and Track through High School. He played men’s Softball for several years. After hanging up the ball glove, he transitioned to spending his Friday nights on the High School gridiron as part of a referee crew which included two of his brothers and his good buddy Hardy. He was a diehard fan of both Husker football and volleyball, the Kansas City Chiefs and the KC Royals. Gary loved golf. He was a longtime member of Elkhorn Valley Golf Course in Hooper. He played in Men’s and Couple’s leagues for years. Gary had a big personality and a big voice. If he had a lousy shot everybody on the course knew it as his remarks carried across the entire course.
He was always up for a mean game of cards and his “steel trap mind” made him a fierce opponent at any Trivia game.
The past few years, he and Virginia enjoyed many adventures through the Nebraska Passport program.
Gary’s greatest pride and joy in life was his family. He was always there supporting us and lending an ear if we needed to talk. The best gift he gave all of us was his unconditional love.
Gary is survived by his wife Virginia, children Kim (Karl) Engdahl of Fremont and Kirt Moseman of Sheldon, IA; grandchildren Brandon (Rachel) Engdahl of Fremont, Brooke Lunneborg (Alec Thies) of Richfield, MN and Mason Randall of Sioux Falls, SD: great – grandchildren Mylo, Brynn and Rhys Lunneborg and Emory Engdahl. Othe survivors include his brothers David (Jolene) Meyer, Robert (Chris) Meyer, Ronald (Roxanne) Meyer along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral will be 10:30am, Friday, August 14, 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery north of Hooper. Visitation with the family present will be Thursday, August 13, 2026 from 5pm to 7pm at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont. Memorials are suggested to the family.
