The Nebraska FFA Foundation is launching its annual Blue Jackets. Bright Futures. campaign, aiming to provide official FFA jackets to students across the state who may not otherwise be able to afford them.
The monthlong fundraising campaign runs from Aug. 1 through Sept. 1. A tax-deductible donation of $150 pays for one new FFA jacket embroidered with a student’s name and chapter, along with an official FFA tie or scarf.
Students apply for the program with support from their local FFA advisor. Applications are reviewed by a committee of donors, board members and supporters, who select recipients based on the information submitted.
Demand for the program continues to outpace available funding. More than 500 Nebraska students applied for a jacket last year, but only 257 received one through the program, according to the Nebraska FFA Foundation.
Foundation officials said the number of jackets awarded each year depends entirely on donor support.
The blue corduroy FFA jacket has long been recognized as a symbol of leadership, agricultural education and membership in the National FFA Organization. Foundation leaders say providing students with a jacket can help remove a financial barrier to participation in FFA activities and leadership opportunities.
