Young Farmer Friday takes us to western Nebraska, where Tevyn Pieper is helping carry on her family’s ranching legacy near Mitchell with her husband.
“My family has a cow calf operation here in southern Sioux County and my husband and I just recently purchased 50 head of first-calf heifers and we are in the cow business with my parents now,” she said.
This year, she says, the biggest challenge is water because ranchers depend on snowpack and the snow never came.
“In the Panhandle and western Nebraska, we rely on surface water irrigation because it just doesn’t rain out here… And so if it doesn’t snow in Wyoming, we don’t get the water here,” she explained.
Pieper is also active in Nebraska Farm Bureau, serving on the state Promotion and Engagement Committee and helping at the county level. She says those connections matter, especially when western producers feel far from Lincoln.
Being part of Farm Bureau, we have that security of knowing that there’s somebody on our side,” she said. “It’s amazing to be part of an organization that has your back and you can have confidence in at the end of the day.”
